Why is my RAV4 overheating?

Rav 4 has been dripping fluid (not sure what) when parked. Yesterday temperature gauge fluctuated between off the scale then back to normal several times. Coolant level is ok and unchanged, radiator seems ok too. Please help?

Do not trust the coolant level shown in the plastic coolant tank . Let the engine cool right down and remove the cap on the radiator - the radiator should be full.
If it is not full you aught to take it to a reliable mechanic to have the cooling system checked for leaks.
