You have to remove the cross bar, and the heat shield. Most people will tell you that you also have to remove the exhaust pipe on that side of the car, but I was able to get mine out (and back in) without removing it. It wasn't easy, but by flipping it around end to end, I was able to get it out after about 10 minutes of working at it. It is really tight, and you have to move and twist it in the exact way to do it. It was even more difficult to get the new one in, but I succeeded. I had to even remove a nut here and there just because I needed the extra 1/8 inch that it took up. That was really it-- other than getting the starter in and out of the location, the job wasn't too difficult.
