Yamaha Road Warrior won't stay running when shifted to 1st?

2007 Yamaha Road Warrior bought today used. Ran fine till I got home. Put it in neutral while I opened the garage. I got on pulled in the clutch and downshifted to 1st, it conked out. It will stay running as long as I don't shift. Got any clues?

make sure the sidestand is up ,the stand has a cutout to stop you pulling away with the stand down
