my citroen c5 speedo is not working properly?

the speedo on my 2002 hdi diesel hatchback c5 seems to be working but is giving incorrect readings ie sometimes it will show 30mph when i am clearly going faster or it might show 50mph when i am going slower, it will also show a speed reading ie 20mph even when the car is stationery, but after a few minutes the needle drops back to 0 and the saga starts all over again.

HI This is the second C5 instrument panel I have fitted in the five years since I bough it second hand ...on a 51 plate..The first one came from Gateway spare parts free ad ...£40. delivered .This time same thing a..only £30 delivered a..when I fitted it the clock changed from my 109.000 miles to 259.396 miles and the Speedo stayed at 10 miles when engine was off.The suppliers said bin it and another one has arrived today free of charge.
The garage will also fit it again free of charge tomorrow.
The first one the mileage went to what my computer had recorded .the second one * either added or put it`s mileage in * hence the 256.396 * ..what do I do if this replacement does not go to my recorded mileage??

Once you have removed the instrument panel as Ron describes then it can be easily taken apart. There are a few plastic clips which hold the transparent screen and black casing to the part with the electronics in. If you remove that you can access the speedo needle itself. In my case the needle had come loose and could be glued back on in with super glue. Make sure you have the needle pointing to zero when the glue dries. Hope this helps

Just got ours back from cluster repairs uk. Its all seams to be working so hats off.

Do I need to disconnect the battery before removing the speedo head? If so, what effect will this have on the car's electronics?

Tony M410, March 2010
We had the same problem with ours last month. Tried a company called cluster repairs uk and they repaired the unit for us with a 3 year warranty. You can get them on Clusterrepairsuk.co.uk.

good luck to all.

This has been very useful guys. Mine has the same fault. I am just wondering if there are any other considerations to do with the electrical system while disconnecting the dials.

Frenchy, October 2009
what is the speedometer connected to?

mjd, April 2009
when u take the speedo out it is easy to take the back off on the back of each dial is a little motor pull out and swop over with the rev one the hands will fall off but u can put back on with a bit of care your speedo will work but your rev wont

snap, my speedo has started doing just the same thing this weekend, the milage is still clocking up properly so it probably isn't the speed sensor but the clock itself.
the only consolation we have is that it is very easy to remove the instrument panel, it is held in place by two clips on itse bottom edge which you access by pulling the steering wheel adjustment out and down as far as it will go, then sliding a blunt lever (i used spoon handles!) between the instrument panel and the dash. the panel then swings out from the bottom. there is a wiring plug on the back which comes off when you push the black lever across. there are a few speedos for sale on Auto trader for arond £50.00 at the moment, (except for the 2.2 diesel auto that i've got (typical!) hope this is of some help
regards
Ron
