The answering machine red light lights up but it won't let me retrieve the message. I have to unplug the unit to get the red light to go out. When I tried to retrieve the message from the handset it was just jibberish. Otherwise people call, leave a message and I never get it. The red light doesn't blink, just lights up. I love having 3 handsets, but the answering machine is driving me crazy.

Take it to a repair shop and dont be so tight.
Line simulators are used to test answering machines and engineers to understand the results.
Just pay an engineer to fix it and you will get a proper job done safely
