Installation Manual for Texecom Veritas R8 Required?

I have a problem as the company who previously carried out the servicing on the alarm system (Texecom Veritas R8) for the last occupants are holding me to ransom by not releasing the number that they changed the Engineers code to. I therefore require an Installation Manual to be able to carry out a reset in the absence of the current Engineers code.
I have downloaded a couple of manuals but these are for later versions to my system as the circuit boards differ considerably. The manual I require is for a Texecom Veritas R8 manufactered before 1996, the details as follows;
Printed on the PCB: TEXECOM 1995 PC009-4
Label on the chip: DF0029113 5/96
The company that previously serviced the alarm will remain nameless but I'm totally unimpressed with them. They wanted £150 call out before they even did any work on it and then informed me that the battery would need changing after 5 years for a cost of about £80. I agree with being changed after 5 years but new battery is only in the region of £20 and on their last service the battery was already 7 years old as the date was written on it and the scuffy service sheet scrap of paper. I changed the battery myself after finding a workaround for when the anti-tamper was activated. To make matters worse I was told I couldn't have the Engineers code due to sercurity reasons and after pressing for a reason they eventually told me it was the same code for all the alarms they serviced. Some security - not! So not impressed with that company in the least.
Any help in obtaining the Installation Manual for my specific version would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, is it possible to change the entry point on a Veritas Alarm. Currently set to back door but want to change to front door instead or have both for entry??

Dave Dutton, October 2010
Sorry for delay in getting back here. I`ll answer in the points you give.
1. 8 yrs is too long, but it may have been refused by the customer before.
2. It would be a chargeable item, it is not included in the contract unless it was a comprehensive one.
3.The battery may have been left because they indeed have no waste licence.
4.There could be non maintained systems still with the old code in, hence engineer codes are never given out period.
5.Some companies do "lock" codes in. A practise I actually loath. It would be cheaper in some cases to just replace the panel as has been suggested.
6,Your insurers are very amicable then, mine insist on a maintained system. Your insurers comment on you holding the codes for system changes shows either lack of care or naivety concerning the possible accidental removal of protection of the insured.
7.You have a choice to use another company, they will do the same and put their own code in.
It really is in there for your own protection. It prevents errors being made, why we can offer certification for insurers. Otherwise what would be the point?

To answer Paul this same (nameless) alarm company replaced a battery for a friend of mine only when it was pointed out that it was 8 years old. They even attempted to charge him for it as although he'd paid for the renewal of the contract the service was 2 days over 12 months. He refused to pay the bill the engineer left. But more worrying is that the old battery was left in the roof space so no charge to them to dispose of it. I'll now suggest he asks them to go back to collect it.
On the point of using a generic engineers code then if this is changed regularly, as you suggest, the timespan will now be such that security won't now be affected if they inform me what the code is.
I did contact another company to enquire if they'd take the alarm system on but as soon as I answered their question of who'd been servicing it previously, they told me it would need a new panel. The reason they gave for this was that they'd found with experience that almost every panel the former company had installed or serviced had been locked. This other company would have been more than happy to either put in an engineers code of my choice or inform me of the one they'd used. They stated to me that they relied on giving a good service to retain customers but stopped short of saying the other practice was retaining customers through blackmail.
I've checked with my insurance company and they replied by email that they wouldn't have any problem if I had the code and it wouldn't affect the policy either. They are fully aware of the situation regarding the alarm system not having an annual service due to the blackmailing company and confirmed it doesn't affect the policy as I'd stated this to them.
When you take over a property its correct that, if there's a problem, the utilities sometimes raise a charge. However the difference here is that you can choose your respective utility company whereas this alarm company is blackmailling me to use them by retaining the code and locking the panel so that it can't be changed by anyone else. This practice needs to be made illegal.
True that when you buy a property you also buy the alarm system but with this practice if appears that you're seemingly only renting the alarm system. Its in reality obtaining money by extortion.

I have renewed the battery on my R8, changed the code and done a walk through test and all appears to be ok, however when I try to set the alarm I get a double beep which goes on forever and to silence it I have to cancel the alarm.
Anyone out there any idea as to what is going on, I have went through the user manual and cannot find any trace of this "fault"

Frank, June 2010
I understand your frustration regarding the callout charges by the alarm company but see it from both side as i work for a security alarm company. If you dont want to pay the callout charge take out the control panel and replace it with a new unit and wire it up, then programme up the system for full set and then part set for night time use, the unit will only cost you £40-£50 saving you £130.
Regarding the battery i agree the cost of £80 is rather high, but like any other company they are there to make money so a percentage will be put on the cost of the battery depending on size of battery, then the company has to dispose of the battery to meet with regulations, this i doubt you will do apart from throw it in the bin.
The alarm company have to pay another company to come out and take away the battery and dipose of it properley, someone has to pay for this.
Regarding engineers codes every intruder company has a generic code for all of there systems and will change them every now and then.
The engineer risks being suspended if he gives the code out to a customer as he is risking the companies other systems.
if you dont want to replace the control panel crash the system and re-programme it, its simple.

One example for you all
When you move into your new home you have to get the telephone company, gas company, or electrical company or even your sat tv company to come out and get things on, each one will have a charge if there is a fault with your appliance.
When you buy the house you also buy the security alarm system, thats why the alarm company have a set charge.
If you take out a standard maintenance contract with them for 12 months they might do battery and codes for £0

Well Mr Concerned, think of another version of events. You pay for and each year have two maintenance visits as you have police responce. The police (ACPO) make policy, one of which is " A customer must not reset an unexplained alarm occurance" in laymans terms. So you have a false alarm with in a certain peroid and reset it because you have a "special code" then it trips the following night and you reset it again. Now you are blacklisted by the local authourity. Invalid insurance get the game plan?
Or you change the entry route cause more false alarms more blacklisting. I could go on, you as a customer sign for the above conditions, yet you want both bites of the cherry. Are you for example a great car mechanic and fix your own brakes or do you trust a "pro". Or use the cheap back street garage, you do know you get what you pay for. I think that covers your sad argument, fit it yourself have total control, have it done professionally and you will have certain restrictions and contracts in place, after all its your signature and agreement at the end of the day.

If you do not like this then you are welcome to have the code changed back to one you wish for a fee of course, do you do things for nothing? Then you can discuss with your insurers how you are qualified to inspect and maintain a product which could possibly save your family, yourself or friends from injury or even worse from a badly maintained security system.

A professional security consultant, May 2010
The stance taken by "A professional security consultant" is far from professional and if this is the true face of the security alarm business, it needs a big shake up. Since when is changing the Engineer's number on a Customer's owned alarm system and then demanding money to change it back considered good practice or customer care? Blackmail or extortion is a more apt description!
A Customer pays them to service the alarm system and that's only what they should do. They should NOT be changing the Engineers code so they have the customer forced into using them or incurring so called charges to change a number that has been changed without a Customer's permission.
Perhaps its time that this practice is exposed and publicised on programmes such as Rouge Traders, Watchdog, etc. Maybe we, as Customers, start reporting these Companies to Trading Standards as enough reports will flag up something is wrong.
Another action to take will be to ask the person servicing the system for the code before he leaves the premises and test it out to ensure that the correct one has been given. If the correct code or no code is given then refuse to pay until such time it is given. Most companies want payment to be made to the man doing the work after he has finished. If you do refuse to pay then immediately follow it up with a signed for delivery letter stating that payment will be made once the code has been given.
Remember that the alarm system, including the codes, is YOUR property and not the Company that you employ, contary to what this so called professional is stating

A Concerned Customer, April 2010
The reason is exactly that security companies use the same codes for all systems and change them every so often. It is their property when nunder contract ( the code) out of contract there should no reason for them to rest it to one of your choice but a call out would be chargeable. Exactly the same if they change a battery a call out charge is applicable. What if your not being straight with people and want the manual to sabotage ? Have you rang Texecom to see if they will give you one, the answer would be no.

veritas R8 model more then 10yrs old ...

alan li, January 2010
I have just moved into a house which has the R8c fitted. (PCB dated 2002)
I have managed to get the alarm code from next door, but I could also do with an installation manual.
The system was apparently installed by the previous owner, no idea if he had a service contract or whatever so I am a bit stuck.
If anyone has the installation manual for this alarm, I would be greatful.
I am worried about these service timers etc and the fact that I have opened the control box, which has the anti-tamper switch, so cannot get the thing working now.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,

is it possible to upload somewhere "public" place?
I have the same problem: new house, old system...
I only found the code to change the code but nothing more.
THX

Kircsab, June 2009
www.diy-alarms.co.uk will sell you this manual for £5.99 as an email attachment. It is the latest version so won't cover the old panel you have.
You can buy a brand new Veritas R8 panel for only £34.99 from here www.securitywarehouse.co.uk
For less than £50 you can install a new panel complete with installation manual and say goodbye to rip off security companies

Chris G, April 2009
the code on the instalation manual is INS034-12

Paul Dixon, March 2009
Thanks Paul for the offer of the manual in pdf format. The question I have, if you don't mind, is the manual for the ones produced before and in 1996 or later?
I ask as I already have two pdf files for the installation manual one produced in 2000 with the reference (on the back page) of INS034-10 and another later in about 2005 with the reference of INS034-12. It appears that Texecom deletes all previous manuals from its systems and can never supply them, even if they were willing to supply to the owners of their alarm systems, which they appear not wanting to do either.

Stephen, March 2009
Thanks Mark (MS Security) as the manual for the earlier series of Texecom Veritas R8 (c1996) would be greatly appreciated. You didn't say whether the manual is in digital or hard copy. However if you could contact me on 07801 933766 or email on newsmail04(at)ntlworld(dot)com it would be again greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.
