my fiat punto 1.2 8v is ticking when the engine is running?

my fiat punto 1.2 8v 02 plate is ticking when the engine is running. the ticking speeds up as the accelerator id pressed. i have been told it may have something to do with timing? any ideas and possible solutions, cheers

If the car is running smoothly, and there's oil in the engine, and water in the cooling system then I can only think that the clearance gaps of the valve tappets need checked or adjusted. There is always a slight ticking noise from this engine, but I'd suggest checking the valve tappet clearance measurements. An other thing to check is the alternater, as the brushes may be worn. If the battery is being charged OK then it is probably not the alternater
