Jules thank you ever so much for posting your reply, my car has been doing exactly the same as yours. I'll change the solenoid and drain the battery see how it is after this. We had to have the fuel pump thingy changed recently after it had split and we don't have as much power as we had before, it's a 1.6 but feels more like a 1.2 now nightmare on overtaking lol

I have a 2006 Xsara Picasso SX HDi. Last summer it started having issues with the orange engine management light coming on every say 5 miles, for a while. During this period the car would go into 'safe mode' and slow down which was to annoying/dangerous if overtaking. Just once the problem cleared by itself on a long journey. I have an OBD2 computer checker with software and was able to find the fault myself and reset it. However the problem soon re-occurred. OBD2 checks said there was a problem with a fuel solenoid and another, I can't remember what as I gave up trying to solve the riddle months ago and just lived with the problem.

Anyway a week ago I found the solution quite by accident:

I removed the old (not working, as i didn't have the code) Citroen stereo and installed a new one. As I was outside I ran the battery down to absolute zero by listening to music and didn't start to recharge it for at least 2 hours. When I did charge it I used a reliable but cheap auto-charger which I left charging the car battery for some 24 hours.

Since then, when I started the car (no computer reset or anything done - it just sorted itself out) there has been no warning light whatsoever and all is running fine. This leads me to one of three conclusions:
1. The Citroen stereo is feeding back a signal into the car confusing the electronics.
2. The battery being totally flat for some hours has done a serious system reset.
3. The long charging period has given a slightly higher voltage than normal and caused some issue to clear itself.

Take your pick, I'm confused but happy. I waited a week before posting this to be sure the problem has gone - it has and the car is PERFECT now :)

The brake light switch loses its adjustment causing the brake lights to come on to early and flicker, the brake light switch also connects to the ECM [engine computer]to cut the petrol supply when braking, this flickering confuses the poor ECM, re adjust the brake light switch [above the brake pedal] and put it back securely and test operation.

Hi, Got Engine warning light on my 2006 Picasso, turned out to be Secondary Air Injection system.
Sounds Impressive ?, well it ain't, it's just a blower bolted behind and below the nearside headlamp that injects warm air in to the system to help with starting. Was told by my Garage to ignore it, or get a replacement from the scrappy, (new ones cost £269!!).
Still got the light and the annoying beeps whenever I start up. along with a flashing message on the computer screen that just says "Engine Fault". Very helpful, NOT!.

I took my 2005 Picasso diesel for diagnostic on computer ,came up I need a new EGR valve and a turbo booster ,Had both fitted at a hefty price & still I get the engine warning light on every time I drive the car and also the esp. light. After all this I just ignore as I think computers are wrong I've probably wasted a few hundred pound on parts that did not need replacing, Even after having the computer re-set I am no further on so now Ignore all lights I think they come on to annoy me.

i put petrol from a petrol can in my car the other day and car started as normal but by the time i drove about 1 mile it started running rough and eventually stopped. it started today and was able to get it home coughing and spluttering all the way and noticed the orange warning light has came on, does anyone think there might of been dirt in the petrol can and would a good dose redex help.

had this warning light , car would start but was very sluggish, you had to keep the REVs high in a lower gear.

Took it too a local garage (not a dealership) - chap plugged it into the " diagnostics machine" - coils needed replaced

£130 (and that included spark plugs, coils, fitting and diagnostics), god know how much the dealership would have taken

My Picasso has just developed this problem, But it is cutting out and I lose everything(power steering etc) ,wait a few minutes and it starts again but then cuts out again. It does go better in a higher gear, but does still cut out. Is at present at a garage, hopefully getting fixed.

i had the same problem with my 2001 picasso. if you press down and hold the trip button on the dash then turn on the ignition but do not start the engine it will show a countdown on the dash from 10 to 0 then the warning light will go out. but it will come back on 12 months later. its just letting you know that its due for a service. hope it works for yours good luck with it.

I have a 2005 Picasso which has done less than 24,000 miles. The Engine fault came up after the warning light. The main Citroen dealer was too busy to investigate and recommended a small local garage with diagnostic equipment. After high revving the engine and "erasing" the fault it disappeared. The local main dealer quoted £80 plus VAT, the local guy charged £45 plus VAT, a saving of £42. He gets all my future work.

Hi all, my Picasso has been within the family from new. I am only only Air head to have broke down due to no petrol. I first broke down about a week ago and used a jerry can to get me going...No Problems.... Yestaerday my low fuel warning light came on and I have again used a Jerry Can today to top myself up until I go to fuel up. On my way to the office before fueling up, the Engine Management Light has come on and the car was stuttering as if it had no petrol. I am going to drive to the petrol station shortly and fuel up....Tesco's...I will let you all know what happens on my adventure.

All you information, by the way, has been great....It does help to share and hopefully saves us all some money to put towards lifes essentials instead lol

My engine fault light came on along with the e.s.p. warning light. I noticed the pipes to the air filter were very floppy. I reset them (they are in two halves) and it cured the e.s.p. light. However, the engine fault light stayed on. The engine was a little hesitant on low revs. I knocked the warning light off and it now runs like a new one. Mine is a 1.6 diesel with the hdi 90 engine, 2005. To knock the warning light off look at the main control box to the right of the engine, fitted to the inner wing. To the back of the main box there is a smaller one with a plastic retainer clip. Pull the retainer clip towards the engine as far as it will go, it does not come right out. Pull the plug with the cables on downwards. When plug is removed blow any bits of dust off and reseat it firmly back into position, push retainer clip back and it should cure problem.

My warning light has been lit for over a year now. It does not effect the car at all. It started with a missfire when damp.
Citroen will charge you £35 + just to plug it in.
If it does not effect the car I would just ignore it.

My 2000 Picasso 1.6 light comes on and stays on with no apparriant dip in performance. Brother-in-law work for Citroen and said not to worry about he turns it off when he does any work on it and it can be two days or two months depending on what mood the cars in. Is there an easy way of turning this off?

Hi, I have a Picasso 2002 model, doing this from day one. Dealer also said to ignore this. I noticed that the light would come on shortly after I refilled the tank, only once I drive the tank empty, and have it refilled (at another pumpstation) it would go away after a few km. It made me to come to the conclusion that some storage tanks at filling stations are not clean - I now stick to 'clean" big stations - how you are going to identify that is trail and error. The car now have 204000 km on the clock and this behaveour is "consistant" with my theory. I use the SAME 2 or 3 stations in the area I normally move (work & live) in, NO LIGHT, but when going on holiday - that is usually where it starts lightning up again, If I go a route I had done before, I now "know" which stations tanks are "clean" and only use them, once I hit a new route, I am in for the "lightning-up" senario again - I would say, dont be TO bothered about it - one dealership wanted me to change the oxygen sensors at a HEFTY price, - lucly I did not - censors tested FINE, and I'm still going happly!
BUT get it checked by a dealer - I insisted to stand NEXT to the tech whne he hooked the computer up - NO abnormal readings were refelcted by the sensors..

I phoned up citroen about this problem before they said ignore it and it will go away!!It is probably due to a bit of dirt in the fuel injector and will probably clear itself with a good rev of the engine.

it means your engine has an operating fault. your engines control unit has identified a fault. possibly a sensor or component or wiring fault or a combination of faults. your car needs plugging into a diagnostic machine at any garage with the right equipment, to identify the fault codes stored in the control unit. which will point to the direction of the operating fault on your cars system.
