BMW 320D smoking when accelerating?

Hi, I have a 2001 BMW 320D E46. when acceleration, a black smoke comes out of the exhaust and the accelerating power is very poor.

this problem happens when accelerating

any idea what the problem is?

Yes; I have same car, and I had the same problem.
Check the turbo charger, check and clean all the hoses in front; from and to intercooler, from and to the top valve, and have to clean the 3 sensors of the turbo system, have to clean the air cooling system; you have to clean everything you can renove outside the engine, if not you`ll kill thet engine.

I had a similar problem with my 320d, turned out to be the turbo, inlet manifold and also the catalytic converter damaged by oil blown out. This is a known fault on all 320ds up to and including early 2004 models. Fault acknowledged by BMW South Africa but nowhere else. The turbo should be replaced by the "Black Dot" version. If you complain hard enough with your BMW dealership you should be able to at least get the parts replaced free from BMW but you will get caught for the labour charges.
