My 306 HDi broke down had to be towed recovery man said fuel is not going through fuel pump any reasons why would be appreciated.

There's an electric shut-off valve on the back of the pump that closes when the key is turned off. Switch the ignition on and disconnect the plug/wire from the valve and listen for a click as the valve closes. If you put it back on and off repeatedly you should be able to hear if it's working or not.

if you have scavange pump in fuel tank try lifting back seat maybe small plastic cover and banging top of tank. if it starts while banging it, your fuel pump is on its last legs and will need replacing at a garage. they do go wrong.......... some of them have no scavange pump in tank just on engine though. if this has gone then its more expensive and takes longer to replace.
