Reverse light and judders and handbrake ford escort estate?

Got problem with ford ecort eastate 1.8l diesel. First in reverse as you put your foot on the accelerator, it judders, and the reversing lights wont work. Secondly got loads of notched on handbrake suddenly, how can I adjust this?
do I bin the car and start again with a new one?

First, if the car judders you have a clutch or engine mount problem; second, the reverse light switch is on the front of the gearbox and it has packed in; third, you need to take the rear brake drums off and I think you'll find the lining material has become detached from the shoes...over to you!
