Replace w/different engine on Craftsman Rider?

I have a craftsman LT2000 w/ 17hp CV490S SPEC PS-27508 engine. The replacement short block is not worth the whole mower ($800). Can you tell me what replacement engine I could use, that might be a little cheaper and still do the job?

From the engie type, I assume the existing engine is a 17HP v-twin Kohler? A 20HP Briggs or Tecumseh will bolt straight on, but you may have to change the electrical connectors.

You can get an excellent deal on Tecumseh engines right now following Tecumseh's withdrawel from teh small engine market.
