My past experience with another machine was that the belt was too loose, and let the tub contact with the inside componants.
It was not a Maytag.
Now, I have the same machine as yours, 2003, yet different problem, shakes and walks too much. diagnosed with teflon at the bottom of the tub.
your machine is definitly out of warranty by now.
open it yourself, and see if you see any residue anywhere. Then check all springs, finally any burning smell, which will indicate a burning material such as a ruber or plastic washer, or even a ballbearing.
Call tech for a diagnostic, it worth it to learn more about it. then estimate if it worth it to repair it or buy a new one.
