Difficult to get car into gear without crunching especialy reverse but once in gear drives fine without slipping

Its still a clutch problem as its not fully disengaging - normally due to dust and rust on the gearbox spline that passes through the clutch plates. The only real cure is to have the clutch removed and inspected (at considerable expense). However, if you wait a second or two before engaging reverse it could help.
