I've managed to pull off the pull cord/switch from it's socket?

I've managed to pull off the pull cord/switch from it's socket. It cant have been installed very well in the first place. Any ideas on how to re-attach it for a complete electrical novice?

I don't understand the question. Have you pulled the A.C. cord out of the wall, or out of the equipment. If equipment, what sort of appliance is it?
If it's pulled out of the appliance, the appliance will need to be opened, and you may find that the cord is connected by screws, or it may be connected by solder.
In any event, with this level of knowledge, you may get the line/neutral & earth lines mixed up. A potentially lethal error may take place. Get it fixed by someone who knows!

what about calling an electrician in to fix?

If you pulled the string out then you will need a replacement because the hassle of fixing it wouldnt be the option.
