What causes the suction to disipate?

I have a Eureka vacuum cleaner and it picks up dirt going forward but when pulling back on the vacuum it spits out the dirt. What could cause this? I have an upright bagless vacuum. If I'm constantly moving forward it will clean just fine, but if I pull back on the vacuum at all the dirt comes out. If I need to send any more information, please let me know.

I've seen this on several old Eurekas. Probably what's happening is that the housing is wearing out and no longer forming a tight seal at the point where the handle pivots.
