The fan does not come on, toyota carina e 1994 and the car is over heating and the revs drop below 1000. Is this the thermostat and if so where is it situated.

If the radiator remains cool, then it is the thermostat at fault. If the radiator is hot, the fan switch is faulty -- its usually stuck to the side of the radiator somewhere. The thermostat is usually on the side of the engine block, where the top radiator hose goes into.
