I have removed the top timing pulley thinking it would have a key. only to find it was on a taper.
How can I check / reset the timing before I refit the belt and start the engine??
it is a 2000 model

At the other end of the camshaft is a slot that the locking bar should of been fitted to before removing the pulley!! The #1 should be on TDC and the two locking devices in place one in the block and the other locking the flywheel then the slot in the cam should be parallel to the cylinder head and the locking bar should slip in to lock the cam in position

Oh dear. You need cam locking tools, and advice from Autodata, where you can bet the timing settings on line for a small fee.
