How do you release an overwound mainspring?

I've overwound a self winder mechanical watch and need to release the main spring any ideas please

Over winding is a miss conception

Generally watches, or clocks, cannot be over wound.
If, after winding, the watch stopped then this often indicates that the watch needs cleaning
