Briggs & stratton non starting, 3.5hp vert shaft, model 94908 type 5912-02?

Help anyone, have been given this engine and have fitted it to my rotary lawnmower, when i try to start it, it pulls the starter cord out of my hand as if it timeing is out and puffs smoke out the muffler is this possible as i throught all briggs engines had a keyway which prevents this occuring.
have tried putting the above engine No in the briggs site but it will not accept them as i would like to download a manual for this model, any advice welcome as i getting blisters on both hands!

If you want a manual enter your model and type as the following.(094908-5912-02). I had the same problem but read on a little farther and this is what it suggested. It worked for me.

Hi phil thanks for your reply, removed the flywheel and key intact, cleaned all flywheel contacts with emery paper, reassembled and started 2nd pull but engine smoked for 15mins then ran perfect, looks like it was overfilled with oil causing the engjne to hydraulic causing the recoil snap back when trying to fire, anyway all fine now,
thanks alot

The flywheel IS keyed to the shaft, as you know, BUT the key is designed to break if the engine stops suddenly - for instance - if you hit a tree stump with the mower.

This is a classic symptom of a sheared key. If the crank wasn't bent by the event that sheared the key, it's a cheap fix!
