I have just brought my son a scooter. It is almost brand new but has been left in a garage for almost a year. It has only done 147 miles. I can't get it to start using the electric, but it will start fine with the kick start. Today the indicators would not work. Could there be a problem with the battery? I would be much happier if the scooter where to start with the electric start.

If the battery has been standing for a year without being recharged, you can expect it to be in poor condition. So, replace it with the same type - there is a code number on the side. On replacing it, please don't reverse the terminal wires!
