Do not know type of oil but from memory it is quite a thin oil. But what is important is to leave an air gap when refilling. When I used to repair the Dimplex type they supplied a 'dipstick' which showed the fill level.

I'm looking for the same thing. I am a chemist and I assume that common engine oil will do the job (in a car engine the oil heats up to very high temperatures) since it will not heat to a particularly high temperature. You need to allow for expansion and it's probably best to warm the oil before filling.
