How to fix a Flymo Lawnchief RL400?

My mower starts great and runs but it fluctuates in speed constantly and looks like the butterfly on the choke is engaging and disengaging by itself. I gan't get enough speed up to actually cut the Grass! Can anybody help please? Thanks.

I had a similar problem with my RL400. The engine kept slowing down then speeding up again. Eventually, it wouldn't keep running at all. I looked around the area under the air filter, as described by Bill above. The mechanisms were clogged up with mud/dust. I poked it all out with a stick and Hey Presto! the engine runs fine again. Hope this helps somebody.

Take off the air filter and increase the tension on the governor spring - the longer of the 2 visible. Don't overdo it or the engine will overspeed and blow cuttings all over you even with the grassbox on. This engine has no speed control. It relies entirely on the governor flap and this spring. Basically, your spring is so weak that as soon as the engine speeds up it cuts out, slows down, restarts and so on in a vicious circle!
