If the catalytic converter is glowing red, it's definitely overheating!!
This is usually caused by unburned fuel entering the cat., possibly from a mis-fire caused by a failing coil pack.

Could this be a catalytic converter and coil pack, do you think? Anyway, the cat. is meant to get steaming hot - thats how it gets rid of engine exhaust pollutants.
