john deere model 185--starter motor stopped working?

John deere model 185, 46 inch mower, hydostatic, kawasaki fc540v 17hp engine won't turn over when switch is activated--brake pedal down, hydro control in neutral, pto switch off. No click--just silence. New battery doesn't help. Does it need new starter motor? Can I fix it myself?

More likely to be the starter motor solenoid - follow the thick wire back from the starter and you'll find it. Assuming that all the safety interlock switches are working, of course!
