ALTERNATOR PROBLEM FORD FOCUS?

MY S REG FOCUS ALTERNATOR SMOKES WHEN RUNNING WITH LEADS ON AFTER BATTERY WENT FLAT ENGINE RUNS WITH LEADS BUT DIES WHEN TAKEN OFF I WILL REPLACE BATTERY BUT RELUCTANT TO DO SO TILL ALTERNATOR PROBLEM RESOLVED ANY IDEAS AS TO HOW TO FIX IT?

altantaor is knackered. i think i diode goes down in them to cuase this fault do you get a short circuit. becarefull cus you could have it on fire.
fit new altanator try and recharge battery but it might also need replacing
