My 2001 Punto gearbox is making a horrible noise and the garage have said it will cost £600 to fit a new one. It has done only 40,000 miles. Does this sound right?

I have the same problem on my W reg fiat punto. I am told the gear box is gone. So the best is to replace it. A gearbox cost from £100 upwards. That is a second hand one. Including labour you might pay as total of £400.

Fiat punto,s are well known for this problem even at such low mileage.
£600 pound is about the right sort of price as long as this includes all labour and oil and v.a.t otherwise if its 600 plus the labour and oil and v.a.t its rather expensive.
Also at 600 it wont be a new gearbox it will be a reconditioned one.A brand new gearbox from fiat would be approx 1500 to 2000 plus labour and everything else.
