You don't say the car - or if you can hear the motor - but on my Golf I had both front windows fail...
Behind the door's inner trim panel is the winding mechanism - brackets to hold the glass firmly, pulleys and cables - the cables and lifting brackets failed on mine - the motor is not part of the assembly on a Golf.
I had a travelling car locksmith fix mine - £50 parts & £50 labour each time.
You can do it yourself but it's fiddly the first time and you need access to the correct parts - 3 hours perhaps for a beginner.
