smelly fridge freezer whirlpool?

there is a dreadful dead and rotten food smell coming from back of fridge/freezer, in a box which sat on something and was full of smelly fluid. have emptied this by using a cloth, couldnt remove and smell gone, but would like to know if we should have put water intoit or left it as is and is it a constant problem, is it likely to recur and is it safe to use.

This is the water collection tray which sits on top of the compressor motor. When your fridge defrosts & the ice melts, it has to go somewhere. There is a drain hole at back of fridge which drains the water away down onto the tray where the heat of the motor evaporates it. Do not add your own water as it may overflow & wet the wiring.
