would it be very expensive to rebuild a briggs and stratton engine or would i be better off buying a new one thank you for your help

Go for a half engine, and bolt the ancilliaries back on to it is the way I'd go. The aluminium B&S motors aren't a viable repair if internal bits such as the crank or cylinder needs attention.
