p reg ford escort 1.8 turbo diesel?

I have a ford escort 1.8 turbo diesel. When revving the vehicle in neutral there is an intermittent fault where there is a knocking/clicking sound in the top of the engine followed by a puff of black amoke from the exhaust system. If you continue to rev the engine the fault dissapears. any ideas what the cause is?

sounds like a faulty injector they probably need servicing you could remove them yourself and take them to a diesel specilist who will clean them, fit new springs, nozzles & needles &calibrate them or let them do it for you fairly easy to remove on older type diesels
