Help my Peugeot 306 is backfiring when turning over?? Help.

to be honest john, this is my first car, i have only took it for a test drive and everything was ok, i was suppose to of had the car on sat, but the garage man said it failed its MOT on admission, he said it drives ok but backfires when turning over, which means nothing to me!! when i called he was waiting for somebody to but dignostic machine on it, would this tell him the problem, and do you know if it is the valve timing is that a serious problem?? thanks

I presume that the car was ok before you took it in for a timing belt (cam belt) - and its been backfiring after that? In which case 'garage man' wants to check his work again - because I think the valve timing has slipped.

I dont know, its had a new cam belt and radiator, i have been able to drive it, i paid for it before it had its MOT and the man at the garage, said its backfiring, and is wanting for it to go on a dignostic machine?? which diesnt mean anything to me.

Have you just had a timing belt fitted, or new spark plugs?
