I have a warning light problem with a Nissan Micra 1994?

A red warning light is constantly illuminated on the dashboard.Someone told me that it may be a sensor warning of thin brakepads/discs? Another said it could be to do with the handbrake although it doesnt feel like it is rubbing. I havent got a Nissan Manual so I!m stuck. Can anybody advise me.?

The illuminated brake lamp can mean a few things:
1) The front disc pads - if they have wear sensors - are getting a little thin
2) The handbrake 'on' switch is sticking
3) The brake fluid in the reservoir is low.
Numbers 1 and 3 go together, so thats what to check first.
