repairing brother xl 500 i?

i have a brother xl 500i that was passed on to me when my mum died. there was no bobbin case and when i order a brother bobbin case it didnt fit. how did i check if all the outer bobbin casing is definately there and what bobbing case i will need for it

I can't remember for sure, but I believe it is a front loading rotary machine...

Easy to tell; look at the area where the bobbin goes while turning the hand wheel several rotations.

- If the shuttle (moving bits) goes all the way around continuously it is a rotary machine. You need a bobbin case for a "front load rotary" machine.

- If the shuttle (moving bits) go back and forth like a top load washing machine, it is a oscillating shuttle machine. You need a bobbin case for a "front load oscillation shuttle" machine.

My best advice however is for you to bring the machine to a repair shop so they can give you the proper bobbin case.

it has a front loading bobbin case ken thanks

Hello Jenny,
You should have the bobbin case which sits in the raceway, I can't remember if your machine has a front loading bobbin case of a drop in that drops into the bobbin case.
