Mountfield PD - when I engage the drive why does it lock the roller?

My Mountfield SP460 petrol mower starts OK but when I engage the Power drive, it instead locks the roller. So I have to push! ANy ideas?

Problem solved, the belt to the cutting blade spindle had come off and jammed between the belt groove and the mower frame. relocated belt - job done!
