whinning sound from rear end?

I get a whinning sound from rear the rear end after realising the gas pedal going above 40mph. What could cause this? The U-joints are tight and look good.

Depending on which vehicle it is, the noise could be coming from the differential (in which the noise will vanish when you start to accellerate) or either of the wheel bearings. Personally, it sounds like the diff to me - these can howl quite loudly when coasting.
