My boiler is smelling like burnt water - why?

I have a Worces boiler which is 6 years old. It now smells like burnt water. We had workmen at the end of the road digging up the water main for repair and it started to smell after that. What is it?

Thanks for answering John, I can't take the cover off as it is screwed in and I really don't know how to take it off properly, but I don't think there are any water leaks as there is no sign of water under the boiler.
If you boil a pan of water and leave it, when all the water has evaporated there is a certain "tinny" smell - that's the kind of smell I get.

I've no real idea what burnt water smells like, but can you lift the boiler front cover off and see if there are any leaks to be seen?
