Peugeot 306 radio code problem?

I have a Peugeot 306 (S reg, Meridian, Clarion) and after miss typing the security code all I now get is -- -- -- -- permanently on the display.

I have left it for hours turned on and disconnected the battery overnight but it still won't allow me to re-enter the code.

Is it knackered?

Like a sucker I paid for the code, but couldn't get the radio to accept it. Found this site and it's now working again.

Thank you all

1234-procedure does work.

(1234-metoden funkar faktiskt)

Alex, April 2012
This method worked for me!

The label on the radio states

C6CBK0094099
C70000003214

Take the 3214

Add 1 to the first digit (1+3) = 4
Add 2 to the second digit (2+2) = 4
Add 3 to the third digit (3+1) = 4
Add 4 to the fourth digit (4+4) = 8

As you can only enter numbers 1 to 6 on the radio, for any numbers greater than 6, subtract 6 therefore the code to enter is 4442

Thank you so much Greggy

NAIS crew, February 2012
Thanks for all your advice and taking time to post.

Pressing BAND for a few seconds brought up CODE, which I re-entered correctly this time and radio immediately burst into life, no need to wait at all.

Stuart Anderson, July 2011
The 1-2-3-4 trick with the last 4 digits of the second bar code worked like a charm!

MM&I, July 2011
leave ignition on untill 4 lines appear, this may take about 5 min.then enter the code.

oily bill, May 2011
Mine was 5433, did the 1,2,3,4, thing, took away the necessary 6 from the 7 and ended up with 6661 - tried it and it worked! THANK YOU. Long winded or what though, the process I mean, I had a new battery fitted this morning and so that is why I needed the code. Couldn't find it anywhere amongst my paper work so went online, found this site, found how to get the numbers off the radio and how to use them but then broke the front of my radio getting it out! Be careful of that, theres a link here somewhere of how to get it out (found it after) safely. Then entered the wrong code three times, had to wait an hour inbetween, did the correct maths, entered it with baited breath and hey presto! Wow. What a day... But thank you Greggy!

Thanks for the advice shown' got the radio working and saved money...start of a good day

Tried this 1,2,3,4 to my number.... but it's not worked!!! Also tried the holding the ~ button ... no luck there.... I'm now up to 10 error!!! Any ideas please!!!!

Seaside Lady, March 2011
The wrong code had been entered too many times and locked the radio.Peugot garage would have charged £36 to fix it.
Holding in the frequency button for 5 seconds worked and radio working in 15 seconds.

Many thanks.

hey went to try that with the last 4 digits and the code was written by hand on the bottom of the stereo how cool is that

يوسف الصفار, November 2010
My last four numbers are 9409 and after doing the number add-on's as mentioned 1,2,3,&4 I end up with 4637 after taking the 6 away from the higher figures ie.
9+1 = 10 - 6 = 4
4+2 = 6
0+3 = 3
9+4 = 13 - 6 = 7
Now my new number is 4637 However we don't have 7 so do i take another 6 off or is there away inputting 7?

Hi all. after just reading all your answers i tried holding the band (wiggley line for me) button down and code came up straight away so i could put it in. I've been without radio for months and it literally took me 5 seconds to do.

Richard, September 2010
Have code- unable to enter it?? I have just spent most of the day trying different solutions and this one works!!!

Turn ignition key so battery light comes on. Turn on stereo and you should have this ---- Hold frequency button for 5 seconds - you now have ==== You have to leave this as it is with the keys in the ignitation and the battery light on for around an hour!! Display will change to code in..now type in the relevant code with the apropriate numbers.

Almo, September 2010
LOVE IT!! held in the band or in my case the wavy line button and bingo!!

Hi All,

This is really hopeful for me as I have not had a radio for 6 months. To find the two numbers named above, do I need to pull the radio out of the dashboard, and if so, any ideas how? The unit appears flush with the console.
thanks for this, I would love to have the radio working again.

Using the last 4 digits of the number on the unit worked straight away for my daughters car that she had just bought and was about to spend £70 on a new unit as the old owner didn't have the code.
Saved £70 and have a delighted daughter as well
Many, many thanks

You guys are awesome - after faffing around for two hours on the advice of the garage i looked on here, pressed BAND for 5 seconds and i was given the second chance to enter the code!!!! I wish someone would tell peugeot the solution!!!!

Btw mine is a 106 so it seems to be fairly universally successful.

I've just bought a Peugeot 306, XT. I've got the code, however, there are only digits 1-6, and my code includes an 8 and 0.........cant find the digits though?!?!?! Maybe Im just really stupid, but struggling to figure this out?!?! Any answers out there? Thanks!!

Chloe, July 2009
I got my Peugeot 306 back from its service with 'code' on the display. I thought I knew the code and entered it but it was incorrect. After looking in my car handbook and finding the correct code I was unable to re-enter it. However, I found that if you hold the 'band' key for 5 seconds or so, 'code' reappears and you can enter the correct one (if you know it that is). Hope this works for you.

Paul, June 2009
found if you leave or an hour press bnd button which then comes up code in .hope this helps

dave, June 2009
After having no radio for several months due to this I've just found out what to do. Press and hold the band button until you get this on the screen ==== Then leave it for an hour or so. You will then be able to input the code.

Gazza, April 2009
Just thought I'd mention that you should be really careful when trying this idea of leaving the ignition on for an hour. Partly because I tried it this morning and after waiting the hour CODE still didn't appear, so I waited another hour and it still wasn't there. The other part of the problem is that it drained the entire battery, so have just spent half the day charging it back up again and I'm still stuck with the "----" problem!! It is true that pressing the frequency button and then the power button gets some juice going, but only for literally a minute on my stubborn pug.

Pete Blakemore, January 2009
hi there i too had that fault if you leave radio turned on so the ---- is desplayed the radio re sets its self and will then desplay the word code do not turn radio off even when car is off desplay will go blank but radio still classed as on . that was told to me by radio specialist from peugout however this did not reset mine so i left radio turned on and left key in ignition turned once so radio display was on and the battery light was showing after about an hour or so the word desplay came up woo hoo . to enter code for example 6664 when word code appears press no one six times which counts up first digit to six then press no two six times them no three six times then no four four times do not press any other buttons then if the code is right the radio will accept the code after a couple of mins anr radio will come on if not its £23.50 to have a new code from peugeot they will do dog work for that cost as well good luck drove me mad for a year before i found out ps if your car has been serviced oor had any work done in last 2 yrs then peugeot will have your code on record .records wiped after two years if car not been in so worth a bell to dealer

martin, March 2008
Hi if you have lost your code go to the GTI 6 ownwers club site ,try google . Search the threads for radio code , there is a guy there that can get you the code if you give him some info off the back. Did it for me and was surprised it worked. Good luck

Barney, April 2006
NO it is NOT knackered! peugeot have done this by design to respond to incorrectly radio code numbers, I cant remember the full details but if the code is entered incorrectly once then there is also a time variable time delay to observe before you can try to enter it again. There is also a certain button pressing sequence in order to enter the code, which also escapes me at this moment in time.

However not all bad news - If you press and hold down the "BAND" button while also pressing the "ON/OFF" button this will get the radio working WITHOUT THE CODE having to be entered, but the drawback with this is that the radio will only stay on for about five minutes before you have to do it again albeit a bit annoying but it will probably give you enough time to listen to the news on the radio. If you have not got the correct code as I have you will soon learn the fine art of the "two finger switch on method" which might bring a smile to your face ;)

two finger switch on method, April 2006
I also have Peugeot radio and it seems the more times the wrong code is entered the longer it needs to be left on to ask for the code again, mine is upto 7 and an hour is no longer long enough.

Peugoet Owner, February 2006
the code was blocked in my peugeot 306 radio when i bought the car, i was told to put the ignition on for an hour and a half and it should reset it so you can enter your radio code. didnt really help anyway cus i dont know my radio code but if you do know your code, it should work.
