What is the proper way for checking spark?

How does one check for spark in a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower?
Rob Diehard Whaler Fan, May 2009
Remove plug. Connect plug lead to plug and hold the plug body against some metal part of the engine.

Get an assistant to pull the starter rope (don't forget the OPC control if fitted).

Check for a visible spark between the plug electrodes. Do this in a darkened area if possible - it's impossible to see in bright sunlight.
