If it's an electric mower the smoke suggests the motor / brushes may need attention.

If the smoke is blue, then either the engine has too much oil in it or its simply worn out...if the smoke is black, then that means excess petrol is being burnt due to the air filter being dirty or the carburettor needing adjustment.
