VAUXHALL VECTRA C 1.8 SXi accelerator problems?

When i push the accelerator down to about 2000 rpm and take my foot off the revs keep on going up another 250-500 rpm then back to idle. It also does this when driving sometimes. Could the cable be sticking or is an expensive sensor, can anyone advise please.
