Rover 25 - Problem Starting?

Hi, Wonder if you could help.

My husband has a rover 25 51 reg which is having trouble starting.

1. He tries to start it and it makes a loud rapping noise but won't start.

2. We charge it on the car until it shows fully charged and the car works fine for a few days.

3. He only makes short trips to and from work lasting a maximum of 10 mins each stretch each day.

4. After a few days, the battery is dead again and needs charging.

Does this sound like we need to get a new battery as the old one wont keep its charge? Or does it sound like an alternator problem.

Any info would be much appreciated guys. Many thanks in advance.

My B.I.L has a Rvr 25 w reg. The local car battery dealer sugessted he drive it in, and whilst the engine was running, he could quickly check its battery with a simple meter (fearing it wont start again). The dealer found the battery was not holding its charge... New Battery (unbranded) for £35. some Mechanics wil tell you not to buy Rovers because of thier wiring problems. Pop into a local reputable mechanic, and he'll give the low down of its wiring design faults. Good luck.

This may not help - but our 04 25 has been in the family since new and has enjoyed 3 new batteries so far. When it had only done 8000 miles.
It was checked by the dealer under warranty but they said nothing wrong. Last year I had another garage check it at MOT time and , you guessed it, nothing wrong.
I am not mechanical but I suspect it's to do with the alarm/immobiliser and expect to be back to the garage soon as I am fed up with charging the battery.
So I hope you get a response to your question soon!!
