Mac 335 chain saw any ideas on my problem ?

My MAC chain saw will start but is a bit smokey have checked mix ok. Engine dies when reved.Have renewed spark plug Also what are the L and H knarled protrusions on the carb below the idle screw for?

The answer does indeed lie with the L and H protrusions...these are Low and High mixture screws, and are used to tune the engine. To get you going, turn both screws fully in (not tightly) then turn them back out one turn.
