My 2001 Escort locked in park and I had to use a screwdriver to release the gear shift to go in drive. Each time I drive, I have to use the screwdriver. The brake is supposed to release the shifter. I need to know how to repair the cable and how to get the console cover off.
Can you help me?

I dont know how to fix it, but I suggest you buy the Haynes workshop manual for your car. It will show how to solve your problem and much more.
It costs around £20 and is available from Halfords, bookshops, ebay, amazon etc.
Try secondhand bookshops too.
You might be able to get a copy at the library.
Mine has saved me a fortune on my Vectra.
