Problems starting our Renault Megane 1.9TDCi?

Our Megane has suddenly presented problems with starting in the mornings. All we get is a clicking noise when trying to start the engine. It starts first time with the help of jump leads but once the engine is turned off we have the same problem again, even when the car has been running for a period of time.We do not think it is a problem with the battery itself as lights, radio etc are all functioning normally although the engine shows no attempt to turn over. Any clues please?

I have exactly the same problem, as did my friend. It is definately the battery as just had RAC out who confirm this!

The clicking comes from the starter solenoid, which indicates a lack of battery power. So, if using jump leads cures this, the fault has to be within the battery itself, the terminals being loose or dirty, or maybe the alternator isn't supplying the battery with enough electricity in the first place. If you have a multimeter, put this across the battery terminals with the engine running. You should see around 14.4 volts if all is well.
