how can i fix loose cable to lever housing peaugeot 406?

peaugeot 406 diesel is there springs inside the gear lever housing can i repair it myself

old type gear lever boxes had a bearing inside box which can be changed. if it has cables instead of solid bar to change gear then you cant get inside box. if cables have been taken off have they been put back correctly, right position?, clip in right place? or if cables have just stretched then they will need replacing. not a nice job.
