when I turn the hot water on the boiler doesn't switch on to heat up the water. Am I missing something like a reset or is the unit faulty?

Check Burner has not Locked out, check overheat thermostats, these are usually somewhere on the boiler control panel, sometimes under a plastic cap, others are hidden under or behind, or even on top of the panel, if still stuck come back with make & model of boiler, and I may be able to help more
