Put on diagnostic and get the codes.
Then go from there most common the ECU
in the gear box gone. Or auto gear selector
And solenoid valves are faulty replace them
A lot of money. If you want to keep the car,
Then I say get it fixed. Or Sell it for spares.

I have a 1999 avant garde A160 semi auto - same thing!
ASK pump needs replacing. £949 from merc & £150 from breakers yard.
Mine did the same thing yesterday! Parked up now! Someone said the battery could be knackered - what do I know! (not convinced though!)

The 'F' is a fault detected by the computer. The most common cause is the start clutch drum fatigue. This originally manifests itself by driving OK from cold then when warms slips and goes into limp. You will have to have it code read preferably by a transmission guy, check out 'fedauto.co.uk' for list.

We have the same problem on our A class - have been advised that the ECU that controls the gearbox will need to be replaced along with some other bits and pieces £1500...

take the car to a garage have the FAULT code read ,(£?) then get ready to part with some more (£?).
no power indicate the ECU has detected a problem, turning on the F, and putting the engine system into (limp) home mode.
