This may help

I've got a mk3 golf and just the other day the driver lock broke and could not open the door inside or out. I released the inside door panel of where the lock is situated. First make sure the doors are unlocked and windows up. There should be this thin metal stick type this which the outer handle hooks onto. Reach in and push this outwards from inside. Hopefully the door should open. You may need a torch to help you find it.

not easy. common fault, you have done the right thing taking off the interior trim. there is a way to release the catch using some thin but strong wire like a coat hanger. its possible to feed the wire into the catch and release it. but very hard to xplain and you need to know were to feed it in or you will be trying forever.
