How can I fix my Nissan Micra 2005 1.2?

A spanner icon followed by -401 appears in the centre of the dashboard, flashes three times then disappears when I start the engine. The number increases the further I drive. Presumed car needed oil so topped up but icon still present. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?
